Affiliated and Independent

A student organization determined to be acting on behalf of the University that is conducting the University’s business is placed in the Affiliated category.  Affiliated groups are considered to be fully operational units of CU-Boulder and enjoy the same status as any other university department, center or unit.  Affiliated groups normally affiliate within a university college or department and must have a responsible departmental liaison, preferably a departmental chair or senior faculty person to serve as its advisor.

Independent student organizations are free to exist or disband and are fully responsible for their own activities. Independent groups are considered to be “at” the university, not “of” the university. Student organizations must comply with University policies and procedures in scheduling and conducting activities on campus, but the groups’ goals, membership and activities are determined solely by the groups themselves.
